About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Elmwood Park, NJ, Al Dente is a celebrated Italian restaurant and wine bar that promises an authentic taste of Italy with every bite. True to its name—which translates to “to the tooth,” describing perfectly cooked pasta—Al Dente expertly crafts traditional Italian dishes that delight both the palate and the soul.

From the moment you step inside the warm and inviting space at 430 Market Street, you’re greeted by the aromas of fresh herbs, simmering sauces, and baked bread. The dining atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between cozy and elegant, suitable for intimate dinners, family gatherings, or casual celebrations. Friendly, attentive staff provide service that enhances the overall experience, ensuring guests feel right at home.

Al Dente’s menu is a rich mosaic of Italian classics with a modern twist. Pasta lovers will swoon over specialties like the Homemade Fettuccine with Chopped Shrimp and Sweet Italian Sausage—a harmonious blend of tender noodles enveloped in savory sausage and succulent shrimp—or the vibrant Fusilli Zingara, bursting with bold flavors. The Pasta Cavatelli With Broccoli—available in red or white sauce and accompanied by a crisp house salad—exemplifies perfectly textured pasta paired with fresh ingredients.

Seafood enthusiasts can indulge in the delicate Linguine In A Red Clam Sauce or the subtly fragrant Linguine Vespucci, which pairs shrimp with peppery arugula, lemon, and a gentle tomato touch for a refreshing burst of flavor. The Gnocchi Chicken Cacciatore, homemade potato dumplings stewed with tender chicken, peppers, and mushrooms in a rich red sauce, offers a comforting, rustic experience that feels like a warm embrace.

For those who enjoy sharing, Al Dente’s thoughtfully curated family-style meals stand out. The celebrated Chicken Parmesan with Rigatoni Marinara family meal combines crispy, juicy chicken parmigiana with perfectly sauced rigatoni, complemented by seasoned potatoes, mixed vegetables, and a fresh tossed salad with housemade dressing. These generous portions are perfect for gatherings and celebrations.

Vegetable side dishes are treated with equal care: sautéed broccoli, rich sautéed spinach, tender broccoli rabe, and earthy mushrooms are all prepared with finesse, providing a vibrant balance to the meal. And no Italian meal is complete without dessert—Al Dente’s Mimi Cannoli’s offer a sweet, creamy finale that perfectly rounds out your dining experience.

Customer feedback is a testament to Al Dente’s excellence. One patron shared how the restaurant was the perfect setting for a birthday party with a varied menu including chicken, tilapia, and eggplant rollantini, praising the friendly, accommodating staff and inviting atmosphere. First-time visitors have been impressed by the helpfulness of the serving staff and the consistent quality of dishes like succulent salmon with garlic and vegetables.

Several guests highlight the genuinely tender and juicy chicken dishes, including a stuffed artichoke and decadent tartufo for dessert that left a lasting impression. Meanwhile, the combination of authentic recipes and attentive service makes Al Dente a sought-after location for private events, like baptisms, where food quality and hospitality come together seamlessly—even if some have noted minor timing challenges during busy transitions.

Whether you’re craving a beautifully crafted plate of pasta, looking to savor expertly paired wines at the bar, or seeking a warm yet refined atmosphere for a special occasion, Al Dente offers an Italian dining experience that is heartfelt, satisfying, and authentically memorable. I ordered the salmon with garlic and vegetables. It was really good experience. This was our first time there and we will definitely come back. The server was very polite and very helpful when questions were asked about the menu. I recommend this place if you're looking for a delicious Italian cuisine.

Translated from the Italian literally “to the tooth," it describes pasta that is cooked to be firm to the bite. Located at the Marketplace of Elmwood Park strip mall off of Market Street, my partner and I made a return trip after two years to Al Dente for an early dinner tonight. Reservations were easily made by calling the establishment at the spur of the moment. Greeted by the staff upon entering, the patrons seemed to be enjoying their dinners and were seated promptly by the window. The menu featured typical Italian cuisine with appetizers, salads, pastas, chicken, fish, and veal dishes, as well as a special menu. We decided on their specials and got their homemade spinach and ricotta ravioli with blackened julienne chicken in Alfredo sauce and homemade fettuccine with chopped shrimp and sweet Italian sausage in a vodka pink sauce with shaved provolone. Our meal came with a side salad. Complimentary warm bread accompanied by butter started our meal. Food was always made with fresh ingredients, just the right amount of spice, and unbelievably delicious. Portions were just right. They offer a dessert, but we had no room to even try to have any. The service was excellent and accommodating, and the whole wait staff worked in tandem with each other. The price is comparable to the area, and BYOB adds to the value of the dinner. We continue to recommend it to anyone who either loves genuine Italian food or actually knows what genuine Italian food is supposed to be.

We recently had a private event here for my daughter’s baptism party. The food and service was fantastic! Servers were on point and very nice! The only thing was that we paid until 4pm and felt that we were being rushed out due to them wanting to turn tables over to open up to public for 4:30. Tables were being cleared & set up for dinner crowd way before the party was over (at least a half hour) and outsiders were coming in for what I assume was take-out orders and were sitting at our tables while they waited for their to-go orders, so I just thought that was a bit rude when we are paying the restaurant for a private event and they are normally not open during those hours to the public (just for private events). Other than that, all was good and very affordable! Thank you!!

The juiciest, most tender chicken I've ever had! The stuffed artichoke and tartufo was absolutely incredible! Excellent service as well. Will definitely be coming again!

I was there this past Thursday with six friends (so, total party of seven.) The food was delicious, the service was great & they did a fantastic job of handling a big group like ours. The prices are fair & the overall vibe was so friendly. I forgot to get a pic of their stuffed artichoke but it’s amazing! As good as my grams (if that’s your thing of course.) We also ordered the hot antipasto appy & the portobello mushroom appy (which I would absolutely order again next time!) They give you a complimentary salad, & the dinner portions were HUGE. All in all a super awesome little “hidden gem.” Also, I’d like to add that they were very accommodating regarding honoring gluten free requests!

Very good BYOB Italian restaurant in a small strip mall in Elmwood Park. I had the gnocchi chicken cacciatore and apple crumb pie ala mode for desert. Both were very good. Service was excellent and there is plenty of free parking.
